Therapeutic Support to Residential Provisions
Ordinary Minded Ltd have a history of providing a range of therapeutic services to young people, children, and their families/parents, where trauma has impaired day to day functioning. They work with young people in both residential and non-residential settings, and regularly engage with carers and caregivers, residential teams, families, and multi-agency professionals to provide psychological provision and training to their staffing. Their specialism is treating post-traumatic stress symptoms in children using evidenced based trauma focused practices that support the ability to reprocess distressing event/s, so they are able to reduce any trauma related symptoms, physiological and psychological arousal that often results in an overactive nervous system (fight, flight, freeze or collapse), survival responses. We provide many services to residential Children’s homes around the UK with a dedicated therapeutic intervention programme alongside dyadic developmental psychotherapy principles that is personalised to each young person and works together with the staff teams to avoid entering blocked care/trust with their children and their caregivers.
Support Offered in 3 Areas
Direct One on One Support
Where the direct work takes place with the young person. Our expertise in building rapport with young people who are resistant to change is an area we specialise in. Connection over correction is a fundamental approach to building a boundaried safe relationship with children where psychological safety is compromised and rejection sensitivity is high.
We start with a thorough assessment process that enables us to target the type of trauma that is showing up. Trauma isn't just a trauma. There are different types of trauma and it is important to understand how this is impacting the person and what treatments are suitable to be able to provide a targeted treatment plan.
Staff Team Support
Helping a staff team who may not have a therapeutic lense have a deeper understanding of the child's heart and mind is something we offer to your staff team. It is important not only to have that independant eye but we are a team that operate with a knowledge/origins/background in children's residential care. Therefore, we are more than therapists offering insight into a child. We understand the nature and the culture, challenges/dynamics that accompany with the role and environment.
Consultation involves dedicated access to our expertise when the the potential for burnout arises. We support you to tackle issues such as unhealthy caregiving relationships when struggling with connecting with a young person or just managing their fight, flight, freeze or collapse responses.
Management Support
Providing guidance and clinical support to the management team can support a healthier leadership and management structure. This allows for a more capacity to managing your home. Occasionally staff retentions can be low and colleagues can burn out leaving management juggling what can feel like a burdensome ship. We support management with placement matching, progress summaries, consultations around good practice, team meetings and supervisions to enhance their role, taking the burden away from the challenges that you can be presented with when working with traumatised children whilst having to mange a home and a team of adults who could potentially be struggling.
We also offer micro-sessions for staff to explore the challenges they embark on in practice and explore how we can improve.
Therapy involving Oreo
Oreo will only attend sessions with children and young people in a residential placement. Due to most direct work aside from residential work being online. She can on request attend childrens homes to become part of the therapeutic journey. She has a risk assessment and has been known to stay with young people in the home for the day where young people get a chance to dog sit, helping support with developing independence and building resilience and responsibilities into their day to day routine. This is optional for children and young people who love animals. She will jump into children laps if a child becomes upset and is extremely affectionate with children especially if you give her a snack.
